PERSIAN and ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY by S J THOMAS

S J THOMAS, calligrapher

My first calligraphic teaching was in Iran as a child. Our teacher would walk around the class sharpening the nibs on our simple reed pens and writing a sample of Persian poetry at the top of our notebook page. We students were to copy the line over and over again down the page, splattering ink and making a huge mess in the process!

Arabic script is used to write a variety of languages, including Arabic itself, Farsi (Persian), Urdu, Balti, old Turkish, and many others. The traditional writing implement is the reed pen. Thanks to one of my best friends I have a wonderful collection of reed pens from all over Iran--each region producing its own variety. Arabic script ranges from the stylized Kufik, to the stately Tuluth, to the Nastaliq and Shekasteh scripts favoured in Iran and Pakistan.

Words can be formed into patterns, or improvised upon to create a flow of energy across the page.

I accept commissions for any variety of calligraphic work: poetry, logos, designs, etc. If you are not sure of the spelling, text, or other linguistic matters I can utilize my network of language specialists to insure that the calligraphy is not only beautiful, but accurate as well!

Please contact me regarding calligraphic commissions of any variety.
